Blackout Shades in detail
True darkness is built from the details.
A blackout fabric on its own still lets light in around the edges. What makes a room completely dark is how the shade is engineered: the fascia on top, the side channels on the jambs and the sill channel at the bottom.
Fascia
A square aluminum front panel that hides the roll, brackets and motor for a clean architectural line. Available in 3", 4" and 5" profiles, powder-coated in white, black, bronze or anodized, or wrapped in the same shade fabric.

Side Channels
Aluminum U-channels installed on both jambs. The fabric edge runs inside the channel, blocking the light halo that every standard roller shade leaves along the sides — the single most important detail for true darkness.

Sill Channel & Hembar
The bottom seal. A sill channel or light-stop bar catches the hembar when the shade closes, so no light spills onto the floor. The hembar can be internal (sewn into the fabric pocket) or external in aluminum.

Roll direction

Solar Screen Fabrics by Vertilux

Solar screens are measured by their openness factor — the percentage of open space between the yarns. The lower the number, the tighter the weave: more glare and UV control, less view. The higher the number, the more you see through, and the more sun you let in.
What each percentage really means
0.5% – 1%
Blocks approx. 99% of UV
The tightest weaves. Glare is almost gone and furniture and art are fully protected; the outward view becomes a soft silhouette. Perfect for west-facing glass, media rooms and offices with screens.
3%
Blocks approx. 97% of UV
The best balance and our most specified openness. Strong glare and heat control while the horizon, the water and the landscape stay clearly readable.
5%
Blocks approx. 95% of UV
A brighter room with an open, natural view. Comfortable for living rooms and bedrooms that are not hit by direct afternoon sun.
8%
Blocks approx. 92% of UV
A textured, decorative weave with an open view. Chosen as much for the look of the fabric as for the sun control.
10%
Blocks approx. 90% of UV
The view stays practically intact and the room keeps its brightness. Cuts heat and softens light without ever feeling closed in.

Blocks approx. 80% of UV
The most open screen. Insect-screen transparency with a light veil of sun protection — ideal for covered terraces and north-facing glass.
Color matters as much as openness: a white screen bounces more heat away but glares more and blurs the view, while a charcoal or bronze screen absorbs the light and gives the sharpest, most contrasted view out. In Florida we often pair a dark screen by day with a blackout by night on the same bracket.
VX Screen 3500-0.5%
0.5% opennessThe densest screen we specify. A heavy, tight weave that kills glare almost completely while keeping a faint outward view — made for west-facing walls of glass and media rooms that still want daylight.
